Faux Latin is a Dead Language

Review

Firstly, I absolutely adore the meta description of this ipsum generator: "Faux Latin is a Dead Language." This is an obvious slight towards Lipsum.com and I chuckled when I read it.

Fillerati, uses text from books of famous authors. Specifically, the list includes: Herman Melville, L. Frank Baum, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Lewis Carroll, Jack London, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. After selecting the writer, you can choose from works by the author. The generator randomly combines text/sentences from the books to create it's placeholder text.

Other parameters include:

  • "Random" checkbox -- on by default -- which appears to mix and match sentences from all books and authors.
  • HTML Element Types: paragraph, headings (h1-h6), list element, and "text" (the equivalent of no HTML element wrappers)
  • A fancy "element count" pseudo-slider which controls the number of paragraphs, words, sentences, and words for the above element types respectively

The parameter changes affect the generated text in real-time; a feature I have seen other text generators use. The "slider" for the element count didn't work as I expected and it took a little playing with to understand how to change the counts. The actual value in the middle of the bar does not move - you simply click higher or lower to make that number stick. Even more interesting is the fact that rolling the mouse over the bar changes the generated text in real time. I find this somewhat clever, but maybe too clever for its own good.

Keep in mind that the generated text will likely distract from your design or layout as the text is readable. Overall, this is a wonderful placeholder text generator. The design and UI are well done and aside from the odd numerical "slider," I consider this one of my favorites.
